Jobs for Poles?
The conditions for the Poles greatly improved on the 1st May 2007. Since then you do not need a work permit in order to go and work there. This document is no longer required. There are many different agencies in Poland dealing with employment in the Netherlands and they are quite popular. Most of them are honest and provide a very good quality employment for Poles. However, as everywhere, you can find companies which are not fair to their customers. Therefore, it is very important to carefully check the job offer job and the agency itself. The process of obtaining employment in the Netherlands is usually very simple and follows similar rules. The candidate is verified, and if he or she meets given requirements is provided with transport, accommodation in the Netherlands and of course the workplace. Then, it only depends on the person if they will keep their job.
Where to get hired ?
Most foreigners, including Poles, work in the Netherlands in gardening, catering and small manufacturing industries. This is obviously a general statement, because it also possible to meet Poles working in different places. Before you leave for work there, you have to get acquainted with your rights and obligations as a citizen of another country. It is certainly important because you will be subject to certain laws. It is better to know before than then to be surprised and to have trouble. Among other things you need to know that if you come to the Netherlands for longer than four months, it is your duty is check in at the place of residence. You can do it in the commune office. If your stay is shorter this is not required. Still, you have to obtain a tax identification number (BSN), which can be either done by yourself or by your work agency if you use one.
The importance of the contract of employment
If you want to work in the Netherlands you have to sign a relevant contract of employment. Basically, under Dutch law, there is no obligation for us to show any documents while signing the contract. Still, employers often ask for them, so they are definitely worth to have. Another important element that cannot be overlooked is the issue of health insurance. Regardless of how long we are going to stay and work in the Netherlands, we are obliged to buy out relevant health insurance. One of the copies of your employment contract should be written in Polish. If it is not, and you do not understand the contract, it is better to return to your country than to sign anything without understanding it. You are entitled to receive appropriate payment for your work, which should not be lower than the minimum wage in the Netherlands. Its amount is determined twice a year – on the 1st January and the 1st July. Sick leave is also a very important issue. If you are on sick leave, the employer must pay you for this period from 70 to 100% of your salary. The maximum period for such payment may not exceed two years. It is worth mentioning that the employer should ensure that you will be able to regain your health and get back to work. You are also committed to make every effort to get back to your professional duties. If your contract finishes during your illness and sick leave, you have the possibility to receive a special allowance from the Dutch social insurance agency (UWV), but you of course have to apply for it.
Law aspects of working abroad
These are the most important issues related to work in the Netherlands, which you should know and which may be useful, but certainly not all. There are many legal aspects that need to be learnt, if you want to be fully aware of your job and all of your rights and obligations. Working in the Netherlands is certainly a huge opportunity to improve financial situation for many of us and perhaps even an opportunity for career progression. Some people go there for a short period of time, for a few months or a year, and some stay much longer, or even permanently. There is a lot of work agencies offering employment in the Netherlands. Thus, there are many jobs offers on the market, and it is safe to say that everyone can choose something for themselves. Keep in mind, however, that it is better to use the services of a certified employment agency than to take something that might look more attractive, but in reality is not. A job in the Netherlands might be a good chance, but look before you leap.
